As a lifelong fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes I have to admit that I'm not crazy about their new number one ranking. In fact, I couldn't believe that they began the season at #2 in the AP polls. Then the Buckeye Hater Nation began chirping...loudly! So lets get a few things straight. The Ohio State Program has a history of winning. In my lifetime, they have NEVER had a losing season! According to my research, the last time the Buckeyes had a losing season was in 1966. So it stands to reason why the Buckeyes are ranked in the top 10 from year to year. They have a LONG history of winning. Sure, they were blown out v. Florida in a National championship game and by LSU the following year but they beat Miami in 2003. Let's not forget that the Miami Hurricanes were the defending national champions that year with a 34 game winning streak going into that game and a roster that produced eleven NFL players. The Buckeyes started that season ranked #13 and clawed their way to the title game. Buckeyes v. Miami is considered to be one of the greatest college games ever played. Present day, the Buckeyes have one of the top ranked defenses in the country. They may have slipped a little in the Illinois game but the Illini isn't a team to sleep on. They proved that in their 33-13 win over Penn State. As far as the polls go, Florida St. just jumped from #23 to #16 with their win over #13 ranked Miami, a team that Ohio State has already defeated. Bottom line, it's an Any Given Saturday scenario. Ohio State will remain #1 until someone beats them. The Buckeyes have the history and a team this year that no opponent has shown to be unworthy of their current ranking. So, haters hush up! Until the Buckeyes lose a game, all I can hear is the fight song! Go Bucks! Add Comment |
